Tennis great Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with throat and breast cancer.
Navratilova, a nine-time Wimbledon winner, announced her cancer diagnosis in an emotional Instagram post, saying that she had been “feeling a lump in her throat” for a few weeks and had undergone tests that revealed she had cancer.
She said she had already begun treatment and was thankful for the support of her family, friends and medical team. She added that she was determined to fight the disease and “come out of this stronger than ever.”
Navratilova, 63, is one of the greatest female tennis players of all time, having won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 Grand Slam doubles titles, and 10 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. She is also a former world number one in singles and doubles, and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2000.
Navratilova’s diagnosis is a reminder that anyone can be affected by cancer, regardless of age, gender, or background. We wish her a speedy recovery and will be following her progress.
